Jonathan Roumie Impersonation Scam: What Fans Need to Know

A recent case in Virginia has put a spotlight on a growing scam trend: criminals impersonating celebrities like Jonathan Roumie, the actor known for his role as Jesus in The Chosen. Scammers create fake accounts and reach out to fans through direct messages, fan clubs, or comments, pretending to be Roumie himself. Their aim? To win trust and, ultimately, trick victims into handing over money or personal information.

How the Scam Works

  • Fake profiles: Scammers use copied images and fabricated details to create convincing social media accounts.
  • Direct messaging: Victims may receive personal-sounding messages or offers for exclusive prizes, meet-and-greets, or even supposed private conversations with Roumie.
  • Requests for money or sensitive data: Eventually, the scammer will ask for payments via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrencies, or try to collect personal details they can exploit.

Real-Life Example

In one notable incident, a woman from Loudoun County, Virginia, lost thousands of dollars after interacting with someone she believed to be Jonathan Roumie. The imposter manipulated her emotionally and convinced her to pay for fake opportunities. Sadly, this crime is part of a wave of celebrity impersonation schemes targeting loyal fan communities across the country.

Warning Signs of Impersonation Scams

  • Unverified social media profiles (lack of a blue checkmark)
  • Unsolicited direct messages asking for help, money, or secrecy
  • Poor grammar, broken English, or odd phrasing
  • Requests for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or third-party payment apps
  • Pressure to act quickly or promises of exclusive interactions

How to Stay Safe

  • Never send money or personal info to anyone claiming to be a celebrity via private message
  • Verify accounts through official channels and websites
  • Report suspicious accounts to the platform and let other fans know
  • If you lose money, contact your bank immediately and file a police report

If You Are Targeted

If you suspect you’re being scammed in the name of Jonathan Roumie or any celebrity, stop all contact, collect evidence (screenshots, usernames), alert the platform, and report it to your local authorities and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
